A Fascinating History
At the heart of Newark, the Prince Rupert has stood since the 17th century, named after the Royalist prince who fought during the English Civil War. Its timber-framed façade and brick interior tell tales of turbulent times, perhaps even hosting soldiers loyal to King Charles I. In Victorian days, figures like innkeeper Thomas Fletcher kept the spirit alive, welcoming merchants and townsfolk.
Over centuries, it’s seen the ebb and flow of history, from Civil War battles to modern-day gatherings. Today, it remains a proud symbol of Newark’s rich heritage, blending tradition with lively contemporary charm.
